Military Surplus MRE
The pefect addition to your 72 hour kit!

One of the best items to keep in your food storage inventory or 72 hour kit is a military surplus MRE (Meal Ready to Eat). An army MRE is best known as "the meal that the military eats when they're in the field." No longer just a military MRE, these sources of complete meals are easily available to the general public. The taste and selection of MRE meals has progressed exponentially in the past several years. You can also purchase MRE heaters that use a chemical reaction to heat up the food. Having used these heaters ourselves, we can tell you that they really do a great job heating up your meal.

There are several advantages to having MREs in your emergency food storage inventory:

  • They are very compact and easy to carry.
  • They provide all the nutrients and calories your body needs to survive.
  • They are light weight.
  • They have an extremely long shelf life. At normal room temperatures (70-75 degrees F) they will last near 100 months.

The average cost of a single, multi-course MRE may run between $5-$7, or the price of a meal at your local fast food chain. While you may have a hard time fighting the desire for a big, juicy burger during a lengthy crisis, try storing a 1/4 lb burger for 100 months and eating it! Today's MREs actually are good tasting meals and come in plenty of varieties. You can even find a vegetarian MRE.

Keep in mind that these are for your emergency supply kits, not necessarily for your daily consuming. As your meals near the end of their shelf lives, you will want to make sure you consume them. Rotating them out by using them on camping trips or as an occasional meal is another good way to make use of them while keeping your supply fresh.

When purchasing MREs, pay close attention to the mre contents so that there is no misunderstanding as to what you are purchasing. You'll find an incredible variety of

mre entrees to choose from. You can even find vegetarian MREs and Kosher MREs. There are several places on the internet to find MREs. Three of the largest suppliers of MREs are:

  • Sopakco
  • MRE-Star
  • Ameriqual
